Gorilla Trekking Permits Explained: How to Book in Uganda & Rwanda

A gorilla permit is the single most important thing to lock in before any other part of your trip. Here is how the system actually works.

What a permit covers

A gorilla permit buys you one strictly timed hour with a habituated gorilla family, plus the guides, trackers and armed rangers who get you there. It does not include transport, accommodation or park transfers, which your operator arranges separately.

Uganda vs Rwanda pricing

Uganda's permit is USD 800 and Rwanda's is USD 1,500. Both fund conservation and the communities around the parks. Uganda offers better value and a wilder trek; Rwanda offers easier access and shorter drives from the capital.

When to book

Permits are limited each day and sell out months ahead, especially for the June to September and December to February peaks. We recommend securing yours six to twelve months in advance, and building the rest of the itinerary around the confirmed trekking date.

How Jabel handles it

Because permits are released through the Uganda Wildlife Authority and the Rwanda Development Board, timing and availability matter enormously. We monitor releases and hold your date the moment your trip is confirmed, so you never lose your spot to a booking delay.

Quick takeaways

  • Uganda permit: USD 800. Rwanda permit: USD 1,500.
  • Book 6–12 months ahead for peak season.
  • One permit equals one timed hour with the gorillas.
  • Let your operator secure it; do not leave it to chance.
