About Chimpanzee & Primate Tracking
Overview

About chimpanzee & primate tracking

Beyond the gorillas, East Africa is the richest primate destination on earth. Uganda's Kibale Forest alone protects thirteen primate species and the highest primate density on the continent, headlined by habituated chimpanzee communities.

Add golden monkeys in the Virunga bamboo, black-and-white colobus, and the forest chimps of Nyungwe and Budongo, and a primate-focused journey becomes one of the most rewarding and affordable ways to experience the wild.

The Experience

What to expect

After a morning briefing, you walk the forest trails with rangers, listening for the pant-hoots and crashing branches that give the primates away. Once located, you spend a timed hour watching them feed, groom, play and move overhead. The chimp habituation experience extends this to a full, immersive day.

Plan It Right

Best time to go

The drier months (June to September and December to February) offer the easiest forest walking, though tracking runs year-round. Mornings are best for activity and light.

Chimpanzee & Primate Tracking FAQs

Is chimp tracking easier than gorilla trekking?

Generally yes. Forest terrain is flatter and walks are often shorter, though chimps move fast and high in the canopy.

How likely am I to see chimps?

Very likely with habituated communities such as Kibale, where success rates are high, though wild primates are never guaranteed.

What is the chimp habituation experience?

A full day spent with a community still becoming used to people, alongside researchers. It offers more time but requires more patience and a higher permit.

Can I combine primates with gorillas?

Yes, our Primate Odyssey does exactly that, adding golden monkeys and savanna game across Uganda and Rwanda.
