Safari Photography Tips: How to Capture Wildlife Like a Pro

Great safari photos come down to light, patience and a few technical habits. None of them require the most expensive kit.

Gear that earns its place

A telephoto in the 100–400mm range covers most situations. Pair it with a beanbag for the vehicle door rather than a heavy tripod, and bring a second body or a wide lens for landscapes.

Settings for action

Shoot in shutter priority or manual with a fast shutter, at least 1/1000s for running animals, and do not fear high ISO. A sharp grainy shot beats a clean blurry one.

Work the golden hours

The hour after sunrise and before sunset gives warm, low, flattering light. Position the vehicle so the sun is behind you, and shoot at the animal's eye level wherever possible.

In the forest

Gorillas and chimps live in dim, contrasty light. Raise your ISO, avoid flash entirely, and focus on the eyes; expression matters more than perfect sharpness.

Quick takeaways

  • 100–400mm lens and a beanbag cover most shots.
  • 1/1000s or faster for moving animals.
  • Shoot the golden hours at eye level.
  • No flash with primates; lift the ISO instead.
